How a Snapped Handle Inspired a Tropical Transformation

When I say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, I truly mean it. I’ve always looked at everyday objects a little differently. Before I throw anything away, I pause and ask myself: could this have a second life? More often than not, the answer is yes. To me, it feels almost rude not to give things another chance. That’s why I have little stashes of shoelaces, broken jewellery, buttons, unusual perfume bottles… the list goes on. Each piece is just waiting for the right project.

This time, it was an air freshener lid that found a new purpose. My wardrobe handle had snapped right in my hand, and while I did have a beautiful gold, Arabic-inspired pull tucked away, it just didn’t feel right against the plain simplicity of my IKEA wardrobe. It would have looked out of place, maybe even a little forced. So instead, I thought - why not embrace the accident and give the whole wardrobe a complete tropical makeover?

I started browsing for solutions, but none of the self-adhesive furniture stickers really caught my eye. They felt too flat, too generic. That’s when I headed to one of my favourite places: the wallpaper aisle. It never fails me. And sure enough, I was surrounded by bold patterns, lush colours, and ideas waiting to come alive. Out of at least six designs that tempted me, I narrowed it down to three, and finally, the vibrant and playful Parrot Paradiso won my heart.

The wallpaper pattern was almost perfect, except for one thing. I didn’t like the stark white background peeking through. It felt unfinished, like it needed a little more life. So I grabbed my paints and made a few touch-ups, adding more depth and richness where it was needed. Hopefully, I succeeded. As a final step, the whole surface will need two layers of clear varnish for protection, but that part has to wait until both me and the cat can be away for 24 hours (ah, the joys of having pets and paint fumes).

In the end, I think it turned out quite interesting. The wardrobe now fits perfectly with my home’s overall tropical vibe, and every time I wake up and see it in my bedroom, it instantly puts me in a sunny, cheerful mood. What began with a broken handle became not just a fix, but a transformation - and that’s exactly why I love giving objects a second life.
