Reflections in recycled glass - My DIY Enchanted Basement Entrance

Published on 7 August 2025 at 11:37

There’s something truly magical about turning forgotten bits and bobs into something that catches the light and the imagination. This DIY project began with a simple idea: transform the entrance to the basement into a space that feels less like a storage corner… and more like a hidden doorway to a fairytale. Using mostly recycled materials: glass bottles, perfume tops, vintage chandelier pieces, along with a few store-bought crystal balls, glow-in-the-dark stones and glass cubes, I created a shimmering frame around the basement door that now sparkles like something out of a dream.

It all gives off the kind of enchanted vibes you'd expect in a forest cottage from a storybook. Honestly, I can imagine a Disney princess stopping by, brushing her gown against the ivy, and smiling in approval.

The real magic happens when sunlight hits the glass. Crystal spheres throw dancing rainbow droplets across the walls, which I decorated using an old lace curtain as a stencil. I simply sprayed paint over the lace to leave behind a delicate, vintage floral pattern - almost like wallpaper, but softer and more ethereal.

Add in birdsong, the surrounding greenery, and the scent of summer in the air, and the whole area feels like an enchanted garden tucked behind a secret door. It’s proof that with a little imagination (and a lot of repurposed glass!), even the most overlooked corners of a home can become a place of wonder.

Next time you’re about to throw away that perfume bottle or old wine glass - don’t! You might just be holding a piece of your next masterpiece.
